Summer prospecting in Southern California

Most pleasant and prosperous gold prospecting in the summer here is either wet at Azusa, San Gabriel River east fork. Sample 1-3 miles up from where you park for best results - dig to the rust layers. Its a beautiful river and canyon, however its location just north of LA brings lots of visitors. Keep an eye on your back as there is plenty of wild life, 2,4 and 0 legged; some of unpredictable character. Gold can be found downstream but the paying gravels are tougher to find. The river is open to sluicing, panning and metal detecting and no claim membership is required. The gold can be excellent if you are persistent and have the experience to "read" gravel deposit density.


Or for dry work head into the San Bernadino's past big bear lake into the legendary Holcomb valley. Its got classic 49'er atmosphere and good gold. Flour in valley, pickers to chunks nestled among the limestone intrusions. Drywash and Metal detect here and bring plenty of H2O as there are only water sources in the hills and most are dry in the summer. Join SPMA or GPAA for excellent claim access.
